Coins are made out of metal, while paper notes are made from paper and combined with metal lines and plastic. Paper notes are made like that for detection of the value, and protection against forgeries. The physical characteristic of a coin which is heavier than paper notes makes the main reason of why people ignore and leave behind coins rather than paper notes.
1 cent is the smallest value in our Malaysian currency. As the smallest value, 1 cent is not enough to be used to buy an average daily goods or items, even sweets. Even most regular shops are unwilling to receive 1 cent coins in large amount. Usually the maximum is 9cents of 1 cent coins. That is why people tend to leave behind 1 cent coins as they view 1 cent coins are somehow worthless and should not be cared much.
In everyday life, we used to see 1 cent coins would not be picked up if it dropped to the floor. It is a common scene. Even if it is a 10 cent coin that dropped to the floor, people may usually do not have any intention to picked it up. A single piece of 1 cent coin does not weigh much, so a person is not so aware if it dropped from their pocket or purse.
